SEAFDEC Asian Aquaculture, 1997 - Aquaculture Department, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development CenterAQD has grown into one of the largest and best equipped aquaculture institutions in Asia. The research-based knowledge that AQD has accumulated is aimed at improving aquaculture technologies and providing the necessary background data for academic training of aquaculturists in the region. In order to improve its training programmes, AQD made an assessment of training requirements and available aquaculture manpower in Southeast Asia. Details are given of the survey results, which indicate that brackishwater aquaculture for fish and crustacean has the highest demand until the year 2000. This is followed by freshwater aquaculture, aquaculture management, and fish health management. There is also a need for short-term training on aquaculture research methodology, culture of natural food organisms, fish nutrition, fish and shrimp hatchery operations, aquaculture extension methodology and integrated farming systems.

SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department Quarterly Research Report, 1980 - Aquaculture Department, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development CenterTwelve 1,000 m2 earthen ponds were used to compare the growth rates, survival and production of milkfish (Chanos chanos) and prawn (Penaeus monodon) in monoculture and polyculture systems in shallow brackishwater ponds and without supplemental feeding. The low production and survival rates obtained were attributed to the lack of natural food; the high salinity during the first month of culture could be one of the causes of the high mortality of prawn observed in both mono and polyculture systems. Although the results of the trial were not ecouraging, it is possible that high yields may be obtained from the combination of the 2 species given enough natural food and favourable water conditions.
Relationship between diet composition and growth rate of the zoeal and mysis stages of Penaeus japonicus Bate CT Villegas & A Kanazawa -
SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department Quarterly Research Report, 1978 - Aquaculture Department, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development CenterDiets containing Chaetoceros gracilis plus Artemia nauplii artificially prepared diet, Diet-B, and two commercial feeds Tapes and mysid meals, were fed to larvae of P. japonicus. Highest survival rate was obtained when larvae were fed with Diet-B. The results show that the early larval stages of P. japonicus can be reared on artificially prepared diets. Since the chemical composition of the diet is known, it can be used as supplemental data for larval feeding development and nutritional requirement studies for the early larval stages of Penaeus japonicus and/or other penaeids. Information is tabulated on feeds and feeding rates used, composition of the artificial diet, fatty acid composition of lipids of the different diets, and of the sterols of the different diets.
