      Fishwater and agar as binders in a prawn diet

      The objectives of the study were to find out the proportion of water to fish fins, skin and bones that would give a good gel and to determine the effect of a combination of fish water and commercial crude agar on the water stability of the prawn diet. Under the conditions of the experiments it was concluded: (1) Fish water and commercial agar or agar bar gave the most stable pellet, 65% water stability; (2) a strong gel is obtained when one part shark fin is boiled in 1.5 parts water; (3) more fish water can be obtained from guitar fish than from shark fish.

      Gum arabic, carrageenan of various types and sago palm starch as binders in prawn diets

      An experiment was undertaken in order to investigate the use of sago palm starch, gum arabic and carrageenans as binders in prawn diets. Water stability data are presented; EPT-2 carrageenan was found to be the best binder for both steamed and unsteamed pellets.

      An experiment was undertaken to test the effect of supplemental krill meal, earthworm meal, glycine, sucrose or mussel water on diet attractibility of Penaeus monodon. Only glycine or mussel water significantly improved diet attractibility.

      Modular method of rearing milkfish with artificial feed.

      The study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a practical diet, the profitability of feeding during 2 seasons, and the effect of a diet with coconut oil on the fatty acid profile of milkfish (Chanos chanos ) fingerlings. Milkfish fingerlings of average weight 6.2 g and 10.2 g were reared in earthen ponds of 3 compartments (550, 1,100 and 2,200 m super(2)) using the modular culture system. One month prior to harvest, fish in Treatment 1 were fed a practical diet containing 42% crude protein, 13.1% crude fat and 33.2% nitrogen-free extract while fish in Treatment 2 depended solely on the natural food in the pond. The fish fed during the last month of culture were heavier (141 g) than the unfed fish (100 g) in Experiment 1 (dry season) but had similar weights (44 and 41 g) in Experiment 2 (rainy season). Weight gain of fish in Experiment 1 was significantly higher than in Experiment 2. Varying temperature and salinity during different seasons influenced fish growth and production. Feeding milkfish was not profitable during the cooler months. Fatty acid profile in depot fat of fed fish reflected that of the diet. Palatability tests showed that fed fish were preferred to the unfed fish.

      Survival and changes in the fine structure of selected tissues of Penaeus monodon Fabricius juveniles fed various carbohydrates

      Penaeus monodon juveniles were reared on semipurified diets containing various carbohydrates (maltose, sucrose, dextrin, molasses, cassava starch, corn starch or sago palm starch). Significant differences were observed between the type as well as the level of carbohydrate in the diet on the survival of the juveniles. Results indicate that there does not seem to be any correlation between survival and the complexity of the carbohydrates.

      The water stability of shrimp diets with various polysaccharides as a binding agent

      The water stability of shrimp (Penaeus monodon) diets with various polysaccharides as binding agents were tested without steaming. The diet with alginate showed the best water stability and did not completely disintegrate in 24 hours. However, the use of alginate is dependent on cost and availability, so alternate choices may be a combination of sago palm starch and wheat flour or glutinous rice flour.
