Memoirs of the Kagoshima University Research Center for the South Pacific, 1980 - Kagoshima University Research Center for the South PacificPenaeus monodon larvae were grown from zoea1 to mysis2 stages using varying levels of single-celled Chaetoceros sp., baker's yeast, and a combination of the two. The effects of feeds and feeding on the survival rates of the larvae were discussed. The highest survival rate of 76.8% was obtained when the larvae were fed on a mixture of Chaetoceros sp. and baker's yeast at feeding levels of 10-50 x 103 cells per ml of sea water and 1 g per ton per day, respectively. When the larvae were fed on Chaetoceros sp. alone, feeding level of 10-50 x 103 cells per ml of sea water seemed to give optimal survival rate. The results of the present study also suggest that baker's yeast could be applied in the mas culture of Penaeus monodon larvae.

Proceedings of the Third Asian Fisheries Forum, 26-30 October 1992, Singapore, 1994 - Asian Fisheries SocietyProtein sources, hydrolyzed fish protein concentrate and plasmolyzed lactic yeast, were used to partially replace fish meal and soybean meal, respectively, in a basal diet (diet 1) at these levels; 5% fish protein concentrate + 5% lactic yeast (diet 2), 5% fish protein concentrate (diet 3), and 5% lactic yeast (diet 4). A commercial diet was used as control. Diets were fed to Penaeus monodon postlarvae in an eight-week feeding trial in tanks. Parameters measured to determine diet efficiency were weight gain, survival, mass weight and feed conversion efficiency. Growth rates of shrimp postlarvae fed diets 2 and 4 were similar to those of the basal and commercial diets but significantly higher (P<0.05) than diet 3. On the other hand, diet 3 gave the highest survival rate. This value was significantly higher than the commercial diet but not significantly different (P>0.05) from diets 1, 2, and 4. Performance in terms of mass weights gave no significant differences among treatments. Field-testing of the diets showed that both fish protein concentrate and lactic yeast can support shrimp production in brackishwater ponds.

It has been successfully used as feed for Penaeus japonicus larvae, for Brachionus plicatilis mass culture, and for the improvement of nutritional quality of Tigriopus japonicus. It has been found most effective as supplemental food when enough phytoplankton cannot be supplied.
