      Algal production in wastewater: Progress and problems.

      Algal production in wastewater is reviewed in two major areas: (1) production of single-cell proteins, and (2) its integration with aquaculture for the production of natural feeds. Progress achieved so far in the various aspects of algal production in the laboratory and outdoors are discussed, as are biotechnological problems in the operation and maintenance of high-rate algal ponds. The need for more basic and applied research is emphasized.

      Cage culture of Oreochromis aureus and Oreochromis niloticus hybrids in Laguna Lake, Philippines.

      A reciprocal cross of male Oreochromis aureus and female Oreochromis niloticus were made to produce the hybrids stocked in cages in Laguna Lake, Philippines with and without feeding. The growth rates of the hybrids from the cross of female O. aureus and male O. niloticus were better than the other hybrids. From the first to the sixth culture months.

      The hybrids in terms of bulk weight per cage and percentage survival did not differ significantly. However, the average weight per fish was higher in the hybrids of O. aureus (female) x O. niloticus (male) than that of that of the original cross. The stocking density of 40/m3, supplemental feeding did not influence growth compared to the control.

      Large scale hatchery production of Penaeus monodon using natural food and artificial diets

      Natural food in combination with either SEAFDEC formulated or other commercial larvae diets was tested for large scale production of Penaeus monodon postlarvae. Two trials of 3 treatments each, 2 replications of each treatment, were conducted in 10 m3 circular concrete tanks. Shrimps were reared from nauplii to postlarvae. Dietary treatments for trial I included:(a) natural food (NF) alone, (b) NF+ commercial plankton substitute (PS) and (c) NF+ SEAFDEC diet (SD).For trial II, commercial powder diets SP or SMP were added:(a) NF + SP, (b) NF + PS + SP + SMP and (c) NF + SD + SP + SMP. Larvae survival was significantly higher in treatments containing the SEAFDEC diets than in the treatments receiving natural food alone (trial I) or natural food in combination with SP (trial II). Larval development was faster in the group fed the SEAFDEC diet; larvae in these groups metamorphosed into postlarvae an average of 1-2 days earlier than groups fed other diets. The presence of either SP or SMP did not improve the efficiency of the feeds. Results showed that larvae performance was affected by the nutrient composition of the diets and that by using proper feeding techniques and management of water quality, large scale hatchery production of P. monodon using natural food in combination with the SEAFDEC diet or plankton substitute is possible.

      Rearing of the larval stages of prawn, Penaeus japonicus Bate, using artificial diet.

      Survival and growth rates of the zoeal and mysis stages of the prwn, Penaeus japonicus Bate, were studied using natural and artificial diets.

      The highest survival rate, 34.2%, was obtained in the larvae fed with the artificial diet, Diet-B. Larvae fed with the diatom, Chaetoceros gracilis, plus Artemia nauplii did not give the best survival; however, growth was the fastest in this group. The larvae metamorphosed into the mysis3 stage in 8 days. The results thus seem to demonstrate tat Diet-B is an effective diet for the early larval stages of the prawn, P. japonicus.
