Abstract
With the increasing demand for food fish as the primary source of dietary protein, some aquaculture practices have shifted from traditional to semi-intensive or intensive system, requiring the use of feeds for successful growth of aquaculture. Alone, feeds are considered as a costly input in aquaculture, comprising over 50 % of the total operating costs. Most, if not all farms in the country, are relying on commercial feeds which are either imported or locally produced.
For many years, locally available materials have been studied for their potential as alternative protein sources or feed additives in fish feeds. Utilization of these alternative or non-conventional feed sources with little or no use as human food may provide reasonable options in feed formulation. In the Philippines, there is a potential for fish farmers to develop and utilize local feedstuff resources to manufacture their own feeds. However, limited information on nutrient requirements of fish species, available feed ingredients and their nutritional value, processing techniques, and the preparation of farm-made feeds are available to the small-scale farmers.
Given the rising cost of feeds, it is important to provide small scale farm operators, the option to make their own feeds. This manual is written for fish farmers engaged in small-scale freshwater fish culture, particularly during grow-out. It intends to provide information on the components of fish feed, indigenous or locally sourced ingredients for feeds and their processing techniques, and ultimately to assist the small-scale fish farmers in using modest equipment to make farm- made feeds to feed their stocks.

Recent developments in design and management of small-scale hatchery for Penaeus monodon in the Philippines
Gabasa Jr., Porfirio G. (South China Sea Fisheries Development and Coordinating Programme, 1982)It is a common belief that the zoea of Penaeus monodon are completely filter feeders. Thus, diatoms like chaetoceros and phytoflagellates are maintained at high feeding densities as much as 80 000 cells/ml in hatchery tanks during the zoeal states of the P.monodon. This feeding scheme often results in the reddening of the larvae followed by weakening, loss of appetite and eventual mass mortality. It was found out recently that zoea larvae are not completely filter feeders. It was observed as early as Zoae 1, the mouth parts of the larvae are already functional and can eat food particles as big as Artimeia and Brachionus. Based on this observation, a new feeding scheme was developed. Boiled egg yolk is fed to the larvae at 15-22 particles (as big as Brachionus) per ml from Zoea 2 to Mysis 3 stages. Tetraselmis is given from Zoea 1 to Mysis 3 stages at a low density level of 5 000 cells/ml. Artemia is also fed at 10-15 individuals/ml from Mysis 1 to Postlarvae 5. If Tetraselmis is not available, bread yeast is given from Zoea 1 to 3 at 0.1-03 g/ton as supplementery feed. With this new feeding scheme, the hatchery producers have been greatly simplified considering that the most difficult and tedious part in larval rearing is the maintenance of algal food especially diatoms. This feeding scheme was tested in a private hatchery in Bataan, Aklan province by the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department from July to October 1981. All 44 runs were successful, yielding survival rates ranging from 22 to 75 percent and an average rate of 52.9 percent. The hatchery system was further simplified when experiments at the Bataan Substation of the SEAFDEC AQD revealed that as high as 60 percent survival can be attained with minimal aeration. Instead of centralized aeration system using compressors or blowers, portable aquarium-type aerators (5-watt) could be use thus minimizing energy consumption. Analysis of small-scale coastal aquaculture in the Philippines

(Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences, 2007)We studied the influence of the development of aquaculture in the Philippines on the local economy, focusing on coastal fishers in two towns in Capiz and Iloilo, Panay Island, Philippines. Coastal residents in the two towns closely depend on fishing and aquaculture for both their primary and secondary incomes. The small-scale aquaculture business commenced by coastal fishermen has been expanding particularly after the 1990s. The planting of mangrove trees is promoted and small-scale aquafarming is done by coastal fishermen who exert only small environmental loads. Small-scale aquaculture, including the aquaculture of shellfish, net cage culture, pen culture, and seaweed culture, requires low initial investment and imposes minimal workload on operators in terms of breeding management up to shipment, which is why most coastal fishing people want to continue in the business. On the other hand, pond culture, practiced before the 1990s, promises no further rise in production for several reasons that include overproduction of milkfish and the outbreak of diseases in shrimp and prawn. Under these conditions, small-scale aquaculturists in two towns have established a sustainable aquaculture production system that allows them to maintain mangrove forests, utilize natural recirculation functions and help local residents obtain income. -
