Abstract
We monitored the abundance of a non-native (Rhinogobius sp. OR) and two native stream gobies (R. fluviatilis and R. nagoyae) over a decade, from 1995 to 2004, in a fixed reach of a tributary of the Kamo River, southwestern Japan. The non-native Rhinogobius sp. OR appeared and reproduced in 1997, when an increased deposition of fine sediments occurred. However, after a severe spate in 1999, the non-native goby almost completely disappeared from the study reach, while the density of the native R. fluviatilis increased. The severe spate is likely to have prevented the establishment of the non-native goby. Our results provide an example of abiotic barriers to invasion.

    Status of threatened species and stock enhancement activities in the Philippine fisheries

    The paper provides the lists of fisheries related species perceived to be extinct, rare, threatened and endangered as covered under the CITES, IUCN and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) No. 208. The listings of freshwater fisheries resources constitute mostly finfishes that are all, except for one, found in the CITES list, the rest under the IUCN red lists and none in the BFAR list. Majority of the listed species are also specific to some areas like Lanao Lake, few in the RINCONADA lakes of Bicol and scarce in some other minor lakes where they are found to be endemic. Most of the indigenous cyprinid species are of commercial value to the locality and are the main source of fish protein in the daily life of the fisherfolk. The listings of marine finfishes constitute mostly sharks and seahorses which are all, except for one, found in the CITES list, the rest under the IUCN Red List and none in the BFAR-FAO list. Although BFAR listed 20 species of whales and dolphins under its FAO 208, marine mammals are not included in this report. Most of the indigenous shark species are becoming rare and extinct due to the rampant shark Status of Threatened Species and Stock Enhancement Activities in the Philippine Fisheries with the rising demand of shark fins smuggled or exported abroad. These marine finfishes are distributed in coastal waters. The listings of marine gastropods, mollusks, crustaceans and echinoderms are all found in the BFAR-FAO listings as Rare, Threatened and Endangered, while few and selective under the CITES and IUCN lists. Accordingly, these are the most common marine resource commodities that are over-exploited, gleaned and gathered illegally, and frequently exported or smuggled out of the country by unscrupulous traders.

    The ichthyofauna of Lake Manguao, Taytay, Palawan, Philippines with special reference to endemic species

    Lake Manguao is the only freshwater lake in mainland Palawan. It is special because it has no surface outflow that connects it to the sea. The fish fauna of Lake Manguao was studied during three sampling events in June, September, and November 2002. Seven types of fishing gears were used and a total of eight stations were sampled representing both the littoral and open water zones of the lake. The study assessed whether the unique fish fauna first catalogued by Day (1914) and later by Davies and Green (1990) is still present in the lake after the introduction of Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia) in 1992. The study also looked into the local uses of the lake fishes. A total of 12 fish species from ten genera belonging to eight families including Anabantidae, Channidae, Cichlidae, Clariidae, Cyprinidae, Eleotridae, Hemiramphidae, and Siluridae were collected from the lake. In addition to the species previously accounted for by earlier researchers, two new fish species were recorded: Clarias macrocephalus, a native catfish of the Philippines; and Puntius sp., a possibly undescribed lake-endemic cyprinid. The study also provides answer to the argument brought up by Davies and Green (1990) stating that there is only one endemic species of Puntius in the lake contrary to the accounts of Day (1914) and Herre (1924) who both recognized two endemic Puntius species in Lake Manguao. This study also confirmed the assumption made by Haig (1950) that the lake-endemic silurid catfish described by Herre in 1924 as Penesilurus palavanensis is just a junior synonym of Hito taytayensis, a silurid catfish whose distribution is only confined to Palawan. Results of the study revealed that the unique fish community of the lake still prevails 10 years after the introduction of O. niloticus. However, the fate of the native and endemic fishes in the near future should be a priority because most of the local fisherfolks claimed that the populations of some native and endemic species, some of which are listed as vulnerable under IUCN, have declined several years after O. niloticus was introduced.
