The preference of females for male body size was examined in an experimental environment where direct interference between males was eliminated. In this environment, females preferred to spawn with larger males. To understand the preference of females for larger males, paternal care and egg defence abilities and paternal cannibalism intensity were further tested with respect to the body size of males. The dead egg rate for an egg mass during the paternal care period was not related to the body size of the paternal males. However, larger males could defend their egg masses more successfully against nest intruders than smaller ones. During the paternal egg care period, paternal males often consumed eggs in their nests. In particular, smaller males compared to females caused paternal brood cannibalism. High egg defence ability and low paternal cannibalism intensity are the most plausible reasons for females to choose larger males.

    A comparison of the annual changes in testicular activity and serum androgen levels between the early and delayed maturing groups of male Cottus hangiongensis

    Annual changes in testicular activity and concentration of two serum androgens were monitored in two groups of the river-sculpin Cottus hangiongensis collected from the upper and lower reaches of a river at southern Hokkaido, Japan. One of them (early maturing group) underwent testicular maturation with aberrant spermatids and spermatid masses produced during the reproductive cycle. Moreover, regular seasonal changes in serum testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone concentrations were observed. On the other hand, in the other group (delayed maturing group), although body size of the fish was large enough to undergo reproduction, annual changes in gonadosomatic index and testicular activity did not vary much. During the months of active testicular development in the early maturing group, spermatogenesis was observed to begin in some regions of the testes of delayed maturing fish, but always resulted in the formation of aberrant spermatids and spermatid masses. Moreover, concentration of serum androgens did not significantly vary throughout the year. Results suggest that low androgen production is a proximal factor for delayed sexual maturity in the delayed maturing group, and that the occurrence of aberrant spermatids and spermatid masses during spermatogenesis is not linked to the delayed maturity.

    Effect of dietary organic acid salts, potassium diformate and sodium diformate on the growth performance of male Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

    The effect of two organic acid salts on the production performance of juvenile male Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus were studied in two separate experiments. In the first trial the fish (initial size: 7.84kg) were fed commercial feed supplemented with 0,3% potassium diformate (KDF) while in the second trial the fish (initial size: 16.48 kg) were fed diets supplemented with 0,3% sodium diformate (NDF). The control group for both trials used the same commercial fish feed with no supplementation. The feeding trials lasted for 74 and 78 days, respectively. Results showed that the supplementation of either KDF or NDF significantly improved growth and feed conversion of male Nile tilapia compared to the control group. The fish in the KDF treatment had a mean final weight of 51.4g and FCR of 1.81 compared to 45.4g and 1.97, respectively, for the control. Mean final weight and FCR of fish in the NDF treatment were 66.2g and 0.69, respectively, while those of the control were 58.7g and 0.77. The condition factor of the fish in both trials was not affected by treatment.

    Reproductive quality of male Penaeus monodon

    The reproductive performance of unilaterally eyestalk-ablated wild male Penaeus monodon was compared with that of unablated prawns (controls). After being stocked for 6 weeks in flow-through tanks, ablated males showed significantly higher sperm count (153.6 × 106 vs.77.5 × 106), less abnormal sperm (45.5% vs 73.3%), larger sperm head diameter (6.682 μm vs. 5.568 μm) and longer spike (5.096 μm vs. 4.360 μm) compared to unablated ones. Gonad index, spermatophore weight and percentage of live sperm were not significantly different between ablated and unablated males. No apparent decline in reproductive capacity was detected when comparing unablated prawns at the start of the study and after 6 weeks.
