Abstract
This paper presents the basin hydrology of Agusan Marsh and the Agusan River Basin. Also presented are basic considerations in the management of the Agusan River Basin environment and discussions on the interaction of hydrology, geomorphology and ecology. In the last few years, there have been interest and plans for water resources developments in the Agusan River Basin. The paper likewise discusses the implications and impacts of these developments on the hydrology, geomorphology and ecology of Agusan Marsh and Agusan River Basin.

Janitor fish Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus in the Agusan Marsh: A threat to freshwater biodiversity

Hubilla, Marianne; Kis, Ferenc; Primavera, Jurgenne ORCID (University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), 2007)
The aim of this study is to verify reports on the presence of invasive alien catfish, known locally as janitor fish, including their possible impact on freshwater biodiversity in the Agusan Marsh, Northeastern Mindanao in southern Philippines. Morphological analysis, field sampling and questionnaire survey were conducted to determine the exact taxonomic status, habitat, distribution, and the population and size estimates of the fish. The results showed that the South American vermiculated sailfin catfish, Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus, a species earlier reported from Laguna Lake and nearby rivers in Luzon, northern Philippines, has invaded the Agusan Marsh. The exotic fish can be found in lakes, rivers and creeks of the municipalities of Talacogon, La Paz, Loreto, Bunawan, Rosario, San Francisco, Veruela and Sta. Josefa. They may also be present in upstream and downstream areas. Total catches of fishermen ranged from 0 to 146 individuals per fishing trip. Practical control measures to reduce the janitor fish population in the Agusan Marsh were discussed.

Sulfide-hemoglobin interactions in the sulfide-tolerant salt marsh resident, the California killifish Fundulus parvipinnis

Bagarinao, Teodora ORCID; Vetter, Russell D. (Springer-Verlag, 1992)
Sulfide can potentially damage hemoglobin or be detoxified by hemoglobin. In the sulfide-tolerant California killifish neither seems to be the case at environmentally realistic (micromolar) and physiologically relevant (millimolar) sulfide concentrations. An 8-h exposure of killifish to 5 and 8 mmol sulfide · 1 -1 results in 50–100% mortality, but not due to sulfhemoglobin (where sulfide covalently binds to the porphyrin) nor ferric hemoglobin (Hb + ), both dysfunctional hemoglobin derivatives. Killifish hemoglobin converts to sulfhemoglobin in vitro only in the presence of 1–5 mmol sulfide · 1 -1 . The amount of sulfhemoglobin formed increases with time and heme concentration but decreases with pH. Hb + binds sulfide as ferric hemoglobin sulfide (Hb + S, an unstable complex where sulfide ligates to the iron), and also as sulfhemoglobin. Killifish blood does not catalyze the oxidation of 10–500 µmol sulfide · 1 -1 to any appreciable extent. Radiolabeled sulfide incubated with oxyhemoglobin or whole blood disappears at rates greater than in buffers, but only minimal amounts of thiosulfate and no sulfate nor sulfite are formed (elemental sulfur and bound sulfide not quantified). Sulfide disappearance rates increase linearly with initial sulfide concentration. Hb + does catalyze the oxidation of sulfide to thiosulfate in vitro. Similar experiments on another sulfide-tolerant species, the long-jawed mudsucker Gillichthys mirabilis , produced similar results.
