The Mangrove Friendly Aquaculture Program, conceived by the Aquaculture Department (AQD) of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) in 1998, refocused its thrust on mangrove-friendly shrimp aquaculture as a response to the growing concern on the loss of mangroves in the region, which has been attributed to the fast development of the shrimp aquaculture industry. Funded by the Japanese Trust Fund, the Five-year Mangrove-Friendly Shrimp Culture Project (MFSCP) implemented in 2000-2004 has as one of its goals, the formulation of the Regional Code of Practice for Responsible Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystems. SEAFDEC/AQD started implementing the Mangrove-Friendly Shrimp Culture Project in mid-2000 under the ASEAN-SEAFDEC Fisheries Consultative Group (FCG) collaborative mechanism. A series of workshops and training sessions have been conducted in the region to promote the conservation and preservation of the mangroves while transferring developed shrimp culture technologies that are environment-friendly, to the countries in the region. The first MFSCP workshop, held in Iloilo City, Philippines in 2000, aimed to assess the status of utilization of the region’s mangrove areas for aquaculture. The workshop identified problems encountered in such aquaculture activities, and came up with recommendations and strategies on sustainable aquaculture in mangrove areas, most of which were incorporated in the Project Framework. The MFSCP comprises four major activities, namely, pilot demonstration and verification, research, training, and information dissemination. A Mid-Project Workshop was convened in September 2001 in Bangkok, Thailand to review the progress and assess the problems encountered in the implementation of the Project.

    • Aqua Farm News Volume 14(4-5) July - October 1996

Castaños, Milagros T.; Aldon, Eva (Aquaculture Department, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, 1996)
This issue presents the shrimp production trends in Asia-Pacific, along with notes on the diseases devastating the industry and interviews with shrimp farmers in the Philippines. The options of shrimp farmers -- which are really quite limited and largely experimental - are discussed. These options include probiotics, the use of beta-glucans as immunostimulant, closed recycling systems. Farmers may also opt to farm other high-value species like grouper, mudcrab, or even milkfish to make use of the ponds they have invested quite a lot on. This issue also discusses Philippine government efforts to revive the shrimp industry, as well as AQD's R&D priorities for shrimp as worked out in various consultations with AQD's program partners and industry practitioners.

    • Promoting appropriate aquaculture technology for more fish in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Aquaculture Department (Aquaculture Department, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, 1999)
Details are given of activities conducted by the SEAFDEC Philippine-based Aquaculture Department (AQD) concerning the promotion of the commercialization of aquaculture technologies. The Department has subjected research technologies to various validation trials through a technology verification and extension program. At present, AQD has verified certain aquaculture technologies that can be implemented commercially for such commodities as tiger shrimp, milkfish, grouper, mudcrab, tilapia, catfish and oysters. In addition to training and mass media information activities, AQD has forged ties with private fishpond owners, universities, and other agencies in maintaining demonstration centres for aquaculture technologies, intended to show interested aquaculture farmers the benefits that they can get from adopting AQD s technologies.
