Effect of short-term immersion of Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty in high nitrogen on the growth, nitrogen assimilation, carrageenan quality, and occurrence of “ice-ice” disease

Short-term immersion of Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty in a high-nitrogen-containing medium was tested to increase growth, improve the quality of carrageenan, and decrease “ice-ice” disease occurrence. Tank-reared Kappaphycus were used as explants. Growth, nitrogen assimilation, carrageenan quality, and occurrence of ice-ice disease of enriched (E/N) K. alvarezii were determined. E/N and un-enriched (control) K. alvarezii were planted inside net cages in the sea. Nitrogen assimilation was monitored to determine if nitrogen was incorporated in the tissues after 12 h. Total thallus nitrogen of K. alvarezii doubled after immersion in high nitrogen. Growth rate and carrageenan yield of E/N K. alvarezii were significantly higher than those of the control. Gel strengths of E/N and the control were not significantly different. Ice-ice disease occurrence was significantly higher in the control than the enriched seaweeds. Short-term immersion of K. alvarezii in a high-nitrogen medium before outplanting increased growth rate and decreased the occurrence of “ice-ice”.

Natural and Applied Science Bulletin, 1988 - College of Arts and Sciences, University of the PhilippinesThe influence of various levels of kinetin on growth, carbohydrate, nitrogen, and protein content of Azolla pinnata var. imbricata plants cultured in a nitrogen-free 40% Hoagland’s solution under greenhouse conditions was investigated. Kinetin concentration of 0.10, 1.0 and 5.0 ppm significantly enhanced fresh matter yield during a two week period. The carbohydrate content increased in plants subjected to 0.10 and 1.0 ppm kinetin. The significant increase in the nitrogen and protein levels of whole plants grown in the presence of 0.01, 1.0 ppm kinetin would enhance its nutritive quality as fish feed. Kinetin at 10 ppm decreased yield as well as carbohydrate, nitrogen and protein content.
Species and proximate composition of Laguna de Bay phytoplankton cultured in three different nitrogen-phosphorus ratios and their utilization by Nile tilapia. ML Cuvin-Aralar, U Focken, K Becker & CB Santiago - 2001 - SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department; Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development; Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic ResourcesNatural phytoplankton populations from Laguna de Bay were used in outdoor batch culture experiment in 1-ton capacity circular concrete tanks and 60-liter glass aquaria for a maximum duration of 72 days. The treatments consisted of the following nitrogen-phosphorus ratios: 2N: 1P, 6N: 1P, and 12N: 1P. The growth and species composition of phytoplankton were monitored in each of the three treatments. The phytoplankton were partially harvested at weekly intervals. The proximate composition of the freeze-dried harvest was also analyzed. The freeze-dried harvest was also used to feed Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) to determine effects of the different N-P ratios on the utilization of phytoplankton by fish. The fish were fed isonitrogenously and ration ranged from maintenance requirement for the first week to 3 times maintenance requirement for the succeeding weeks. Results showed that green algae, particularly the Chlorococcales group, dominated all the cultures. This was followed by diatoms. The blue-green algae consisted the third group in all treatments. Gross energy, crude protein, crude fat, neutral detergent fiber and crude ash content of the phytoplankton harvest did not vary significantly among treatments. However, crude protein expressed as percentage of organic matter was significantly higher in the treatment using 12N: 1P compared to those cultured in lower N-P ratios. Nile tilapia fed phytoplankton from 12N: 1P and 6N: 1P ratios showed significantly better growth than those fed with phytoplankton cultured in the lowest N-P ratio.

Aquaculture Research, 2003 - Blackwell PublishingThis study determined the digestibility of nitrogen and phosphorus, and the excretion rate of different-sized groups of milkfish fed a commercial diet, a SEAFDEC formulated diet or lab-lab (natural food-based diet). Fish (31.2–263.0 g) were stocked in 12 units of 300-L fibreglass tanks filled with aerated seawater. The postprandial total ammonia-nitrogen (TAN) and phosphate (PO4-P) excretion of fish were estimated from changes in TAN and PO4-P concentrations in water for 24 h. Digestibility was determined from the nitrogen, phosphorus and Cr2O3 content of the diets, and pooled faeces after the fish had been fed diets marked with chromic oxide. TAN excretion rate (mg TAN kg−1 fish day−1) was significantly lowest (P < 0.05) in medium to very big fish fed the lab-lab diet (60.8–124.4) and highest in small and medium fish fed the SEAFDEC diet (333.3–331.6) and small fish fed the commercial diet (280.1). Regardless of size, fish fed lab-lab excreted (mg PO4-P kg−1 fish day−1) significantly lower PO4-P (36.2) but did not differ with fish fed the commercial diet (64.8). Excretion rates decreased exponentially as fish weight increased but positively increased with feed ration. Excretion pattern of milkfish revealed two peaks: the first peak occurred 6 h after feeding and the second peak at 18 h for TAN and 21 h for PO4-P, coinciding with the start of the daylight hours. TAN and PO4-P excretion accounted for 20.5–34.6% of total N consumed and 18.7–42.6% of P consumed respectively. Approximately 27.9–42.5% of N consumed and 47.2–58.5% of P consumed were lost as faeces. Total nutrient losses were lower using the lab-lab diet (0.31 g N and 0.14 g P kg−1 fish) compared with the formulated diets (0.47–0.48 g N and 0.17–0.19 g P kg−1 fish); the losses decreased per kg of fish as fish size increased. Results suggest that the diet and size of fish influence wastage of N and P to the environment with greater losses in small fish and when artificial diets are used. Such measurements will provide valuable information for the preparation of N and P budgets for milkfish in grow-out systems.
