Improved survival and growth of silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus early juveniles through co‐feeding with Artemia and commercial feeds

This study examined the effects of co-feeding Artemia and commercial feeds on survival, growth and fatty acid composition of silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus early juveniles. Triplicate groups of 36 days post hatch (DPH) early juveniles (17.09 ± 1.69 mm; 0.07 ± 0.02 g) were stocked in nine glass aquaria at 25 individuals per aquarium and reared for 60 days on three feeding regimes: (A) Artemia + powdered commercial tilapia feed (35% crude protein (CP)); (B) Artemia + powdered commercial prawn feed (38% CP); and (C) Artemia nauplii only as the control group. Early juveniles co-fed Artemia and commercial feeds had significantly higher survival (97%) than those fed Artemia alone (86%). Except for the condition factors that were similar to the control group, higher mean total length (30.2 ± 1.3 mm and 27.6 ± 1.2 mm), body weight (401 ± 64 mg and 339 ± 46 mg), length- (SGRL; 0.95 ± 0.07%/day and 0.80 ± 0.07%/day) and weight-specific growth rates (SGRW; 2.85 ± 0.27%/day and 2.58 ± 0.22%/day) were also observed in the co-feeding groups, independent of protein, fat and other nutrient levels in commercial feeds. Higher levels of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids were reflected in early juveniles co-fed Artemia and commercial feeds than those fed exclusively on Artemia contributing, in part, to the higher growth and survival observed in the co-feeding groups. Together, these results suggest that co-feeding strategy showed best results in terms of growth and survival, and that commercial feed with 35% protein and 6% crude fat levels may be beneficial in supplementing live feed with essential nutrients to optimize production of silver therapon fry during nursery culture.

This study evaluated the effects of dietary fermented tuna by‐product meal (FTBM) in juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Five diets were formulated to replace fishmeal (FM) with FTBM at 0% (FTBM0), 12.5% (FTBM12.5), 25.0% (FTBM25), 37.5% (FTBM37.5), or 50% (FTBM50). After 8 wk, weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed efficiency of fish fed FTBM0 and FTBM12.5 diets were significantly higher than fish fed the other diets (P < 0.05). Also, mean cumulative survival rates (%) of fish fed the FTBM0 and FTBM12.5 diets were significantly higher than those fed FTBM50 diet at Day 9 postchallenge with Edwardsiella tarda (P < 0.05). Protein efficiency ratio of fish fed FTBM0 and FTBM12.5 diets was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than fish fed diets FTBM37.5 and FTBM50. Broken‐line regression analysis of weight gain showed an optimal FM replacement level of 10.65% with FTBM. Therefore, the optimal dietary inclusion of FTBM in juvenile olive flounder diets could be greater than 10.65% but less than 12.5% without any adverse physiological effects on fish health. -
Evaluation of plant proteins as partial replacement for animal proteins in diets for Penaeus indicus and P. merguiensis juveniles

(Society of Israeli Aquaculture and Marine Biotechnology, 2002)The growth rate and survival of two white shrimps, Penaeus indicus and P. merguiensis, fed diets in which fishmeal was partially replaced with plant protein sources were investigated in three trials. In trial 1 with P. indicus, soybean, yeast and leaf meals of kangkong, papaya and Cassia tora L. were screened as partial substitutes for fishmeal. The total biomass of shrimp fed 20% yeast (20yeast) was highest but not significantly different than that of shrimp fed 10yeast and 10papaya. Survival was highest with 20yeast, 10papaya and 10yeast. Shrimp fed Cassia tora L. had the highest weight gain and SGR but their survival was similar to those fed poor performing diets. In trial 2 with P. merguiensis, the ingredients were modified by decreasing fishmeal and increasing the yeast and soybean substitution. The biomass of the shrimp fed 10 yeast was similar to that of the shrimp fed 20yeast and 26 soybean, the weight gain and SGR were similar to shrimp fed 20yeast while survival was highest but not different from 20yeast and 26 soybean. In trial 3 with P. indicus, weight gain and SGR were best with 20yeast and 34soybean. However, biomass and survival did not differ among replacement levels. The performance of the white shrimp varied with different levels of yeast and soybean meal incorporation. The response of P. indicus was best with 20yeast (15% by weight) or 34soybean meal (34% by weight) while that of P. merguiensis was with 10yeast (7% by weight), 20yeast (15% by weight) or 26soybean meal (26% by weight). Partial replacement of fishmeal with yeast or soybean meal would result in lower feed costs but the use of these feeds needs further refinement since survival was low in all treatments. Rearing techniques, such as increasing the feeding frequency, simulating deep pond conditions or using adequate substrates, should be refined. -
Evaluation of some terrestrial proteins in complete diets for grouper (Epinephelus coioides) juveniles

This study was undertaken to determine the nutritive value of some of the more widely available protein sources in the diets for grouper juveniles, based on apparent digestibility coefficients for dry matter (ADMD) and crude protein (APD), feed conversion ratio (FCR), specific growth rate (SGR) and survival. A series of feeding experiments were conducted to determine the growth performance of grouper juveniles. Test diets were formulated for growth (4 replications/treatment) and digestibility experiments (3 replications/treatment). Each diet contained a test ingredient: white fish meal, white cowpea meal and ipil-ipil leaf meal (experiment 1); local meat and bone meal, soya protein concentrates and meat solubles (experiment 2); and imported meal and bone meal, blood meal and maize gluten meal (experiment 3). A feeding trial for each experiment was conducted for 85 days in a flow-through system with filtered and aerated seawater. 10 and 20 juveniles were stocked in each of 60- and 250-litre fibreglass tanks, respectively. White cowpea meal (20.5% incorporation), local (16% incorporation) and imported (19% incorporation) meat and bone meals could partially replace fish meal in the diets for grouper juveniles without affecting their growth. Low ADMD and APD values for the processed feed ingredients (meat and bone meal, soya protein concentrates and blood meal-based diets) could be associated with the processing methods used in its preparation, which could damage the amino acids and contribute to low nitrogen digestibility. Apparent digestibility coefficients and growth could be used as indicators of the nutritional value of the feed ingredients. However, the availability and optimal balance of amino acids must also be considered.
