New records of a marine macrobenthic algae of Panay and Guimaras Islands
(Science and Technology Information Institute, 1992)
Thirty new records of macrobenthic algae for Panay and Guimaras Islands are reported, consisting of 12 species of Chlorophyceae, 4 Phaeophyceae and 14 Rhodophyceae.
A survey of small-scale fishermen's credit practices in Panay, Philippines
(University of San Carlos Publications, 1992)
In the Philippines, small-scale fishermen have traditionally relied on informal lenders in view of the limitations of self-finance and the lack of access to bank credit. An assessment of credit practices and its availability ...
Gathering of economically important seaweeds in Western Visayas, Philippines
(San Carlos Publications, 1992)
A survey was conducted in 12 coastal municipalities of Western Visayas, Philippines from March to July 1990 to determine the seaweed gathering practices of fishermen. There were 83 gatherers involved in this small-scale ...
Assimilation of aquatic macrophytes in Penaeus monodon
(Taylor & Francis, 1993)
The macrophytes Najas graminea and Ruppia maritima are common aquatic plants found in brackishwater ponds in the Philippines. The assimilation efficiencies of these plants by male and female Penaeus monodon (30-40 g wet ...
Egg cannibalism by milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsskal) spawners in circular floating net cages
(Blackwell Publishing, 1992)
Egg cannibalism by milkfish spawners in a circular floating net cage was investigated. The cage was lined with a fine mesh hapa net to retain spawned eggs and to prevent the entry of fish egg predators. Water samples were ...
Economic analysis of bottom line and raft monoline culture of Kappaphycus alvarezii var. tambalang in Western Visayas, Philippines
(Elsevier, 1993)
A survey was conducted among 72 seaweed (Kappaphycus sp.) farmers in the Western Visayas region, Philippines, from March to July 1990 to assess their culture practices in terms of production and economic efficiency. Yields ...
Effect of burning of rice straw on snails and soil in a brackishwater pond
(Serials Publications, 1993)
The effects of burning the varying amounts of dried rice straw on snails and soil properties in brackishwater ponds in the Philippines were evaluated. Cerithium tenellum, Telescopium telescopium and other unidentified snail ...
Nursery rearing of Penaeus monodon (Fabricius) using suspended (hapa) net enclosures installed in a pond
(Elsevier, 1993)
The use of suspended (hapa) nets as nursery enclosures for shrimp fry was tested. In the first trial, four stocking densities (72, 144, 288, and 432 fry m−3) of P. monodon fry (PL20, body weight = 8 ...
Notes on the completion of the life cycle of Penaeus japonicus in captivity in the Philippines
(Science and Technology Information Institute, 1991)
Penaeus japonicus nauplii from wild spawners were reared up to the early postlarval stage (PL20) in 12-t concrete tanks. A survival rate of 13-15% was obtained. Hatchery-reared postlarvae were restocked in concrete tanks ...
Economic analysis of stake and rack-hanging methods of farming oysters (Crassostrea iredalei) in the Philippines
(Elsevier, 1998)
The cost efficiency of stake and rack-hanging methods of farming oysters are compared. Annual costs and returns data for both methods were obtained from a socioeconomic survey conducted in 1991 at the Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC/AQD). On average, 14 kg m−2 (shell-on) and 22 kg m−2 (shell-on) were produced using the stake and rack-hanging methods, respectively. The translog cost function for 58 oyster farms was estimated using iterative seemingly unrelated regression (SUR). Statistical analysis indicates that the higher production from the rack-hanging method is significantly different (α=0.10) from the production using the stake method. The cost-efficient method varied based on production levels. At output levels less that 9044 kg (shell-on), the rack-hanging method had lower average cost per unit, and for higher production levels the stake method had the lower average costs. Similar conclusions were drawn from the marginal cost analysis. Results imply when production is less than 9044 kg, then the most efficient technology is the rack-hanging method and if production is greater than 9044 kg, the most efficient method is the stake method....
