Abstract
Under the Philippine Aquasilviculture Program, the Bataan Peninsula State University (BSPU) rehabilitated denuded mangrove resources, established aquasilviculture technology demonstration projects as a livelihood option for fisherfolks (while caring for the mangroves they had planted) and established community-based multi-species hatcheries to increase endemic fish species in the area.The BPSU was able to (a) plant 183, 300 mangrove seedlings where 85.96% survival was noted a year after, (b) establish 16 units aquasilviculture projects for the livelihood of the beneficiaries (planting that earned the beneficiaries P1,338, 731.90); and (c) establish community-based multispecies hatcheries that already produced an estimated 1,030,502,400 eggs of various fish species, thus increasing the wild fishery resource in the area.The program is expected to bear potential impacts on our environment and to the lives of the marginalized people of our community through the collaborative efforts of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), BPSU, Local Government Units (LGUs) and the fisherfolks.

The Philippine aquaculture industry
Camacho, Arsenio S.; Macalincag-Lagua, Natividad (Aquaculture Department, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, 1988)The aquaculture sector of the Philippine fishing industry registered the highest growth rate of 12.5% in 1977-1986. The contribution of aquaculture to the total fish production was equivalent to 24% in 1986 compared to only 85 in the early 1970's. In terms of quantity, the mariculture subsector registered the highest growth rate of 10.2% in 1982-1986, whereas in terms of value the brackishwater fishpond subsector showed the highest growth rate of 33%. Meanwhile, freshwater aquaculture production exhibited a negative growth rate due to reduction of activities in Laguna de Bay and the slow expansion in hectarage of the commercial freshwater fishponds. Research by several agencies concentrated heavily on the culture of milkfish (Chanos chanos), tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), Chinese carps (Aristichthys nobilis and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon), and sea bass (Lates calcarifer). Innovations in seaweed, oyster, and mussel farming are also discussed. Research directions are presented to assure an ecologically sustainable growth in aquaculture with emphasis on countryside development. -

Aquaculture systems in Brunei Darussalam
Khoo, Tekying (Aquaculture Department, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, 2026-07)Brunei Darussalam’s aquaculture industry is rapidly developing, with peak production exceeding USD 44 million in 2021 and total fisheries output achieving an 88% self-sufficiency rate. The marine shrimp industry is the dominant sector, accounting to over 75% of the country’s aquaculture production. The Pacific whiteleg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei is the most farmed species, while other cultured shrimps include the black tiger shrimp (P. monodon) and the blue shrimp (P. stylirostris). In addition to shrimp farming, a variety of marine fishes are cultured in floating sea cages in both inshore and offshore waters of Brunei Darussalam. These include Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer), pompano (Trachinotus blochii), groupers (Epinephelus spp.), and snappers (Lutjanus spp.). The freshwater aquaculture industry is smaller by comparison but recorded the highest growth, and the main cultured species are red tilapia (Oreochromis spp.), pangasius, and the giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). Culture systems typically range from open earthen ponds (partially and fully lined) to high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or fiberglass tanks, concrete raceways, and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). There are ongoing research collaborations with higher learning institutions to improve the aquaculture production through the adoption of technologies such as the use of Internet of Things (IoT) for water quality monitoring and management, affordable Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) for fish culture, and the development of hybrid solar-powered aeration systems for grow-out ponds. Despite these advancements, there remains a gap between laboratory-scale research and its commercial application, and the adoption of technology at present is still modest. To address this, the Department of Fisheries (DoF) is working closely with relevant institutions to conduct researches that have significant impact on the aquaculture industry
