Abstract
This study highlights the value of grey literature in climate change research in the Philippines, emphasizing its essential role in understanding the issue within the country’s unique socioeconomic and natural environment. A bibliometric analysis of publications in local journals reveals that various types and formats of grey literature are not merely supplementary but essential for communicating climate change, its effects, and adaptation strategies. Despite the prevalence of major publishers, a substantial amount of research in the country continues to be disseminated through local journals. However, these journals face significant challenges, including limited coverage in major databases and concerns about quality, which hinder their global recognition and impact. The findings recommend that the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) enhance the capacity of higher education institutions (HEIs) to improve the quality and credibility of local journals. This improvement would increase their visibility and reach, ensuring that the comprehensive body of Filipino research is preserved, recognized, and utilized in the global discourse on climate change. Consequently, this will foster a more inclusive and informed approach to understanding and addressing this global challenge.

    Increasing the availability of West African Grey Literature to improve marine fisheries management

    The Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) seeks to promote the sustainable utilization of the living marine resources across the Eastern Central Atlantic between Cape Spartel and the Congo river through informed development of fisheries management actions. Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) is contributing to the CECAF-PESCAO project “Improved Regional Fisheries Governance in Western Africa”, by developing a comprehensive inventory of marine fisheries research covering both primary literature (available online on both commercial and free to use platforms) and grey literature available at institutions holdings and not always accessible online. This assessment of fisheries management research in the region will enable CECAF, ASFA and, critically, member countries the means to access relevant contextual and discernible science-based materials and publications. Cataloguing and subsequent bibliometric analysis of large amounts of information specific to regional fisheries management will encourage solid research-based fisheries management recommendations at the national level by highlighting areas of fisheries management to investigate. This paper presents the preliminary results of the research inventory and bibliometric analysis, comparing the amount and type of information available in primary and grey literature collections for the region and at individual country level.

    Grey literature usage among Filipino aquaculture researchers: A bibliometric analysis of research from 2009 to 2018

    Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food production industries globally (Natale et al., 2011), and it is expected to exceed the production of other animal production industries such as beef, pork, or poultry in the next decade (OECD and FAO, 2012). In the Philippines, aquaculture contributes significantly to food security, employment for the poor, women, youth, and foreign exchange earnings (FAO, 2019; Sekhar and Ortiz, 2006). The Philippines is the 11th top aquaculture producing country in the world; it ranked third, fifth, and ninth in seaweeds, finfish, and marine crustacean productions, respectively (FAO, 2018). However, unsustainable aquaculture practices in the country “contributed to nutrient loading, threatening environmental harm” (FAO, 2018). The majority of countries in the world, including the Philippines, are experiencing environmental problems due to unsustainable aquaculture practices. Thus, to address these problems and further develop aquaculture, research was actively done by the government, academic, and research institutions. According to Superio et al. (2019) research plays a major role in development, and commonly, the results were published for public consumption. However, some fisheries and aquaculture researches were unpublished and of limited distribution because a high proportion of fisheries information was published as grey literature (Parker et al., 2010). Notably, FAO (2009) found that fisheries information in developing countries was published in grey literature due to the stringent criteria of the editorial boards of Western peer-reviewed journals, while in Africa, an estimated 70 percent of fisheries information is published as grey literature.
