A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the potential of replacing fish meal with processed animal by-product meals, meat meal and blood meal (4:1 ratio), in practical diets for juvenile grouper (Epinephelus coioides). Eight isonitrogenous diets were formulated to contain 45% protein and 12% lipid. Fish meal was replaced by 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% of meat meal and blood meal (4:1) mixture (diets 1–8). The diet with 100% fish meal (diet 1) or trash fish as feed (diet 9) were used as controls. Grouper juveniles were reared in 250-l circular fiberglass tanks maintained in a flow-through seawater system. Each dietary treatment was tested in quadruplicate groups of 25 fish per tank arranged in a completely randomized design. Fish were fed the diets twice per day at a daily feeding rate of 5–6% of biomass and trash fish at 10–12% of biomass for 60 days. Percentage weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), survival, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and body composition of grouper juveniles were measured. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in growth performance among fish fed diets 1–7 (0–80% fish meal replacement) with those fed diet 9 (trash fish as feed). However, fish fed diet 3 had significantly higher (P<0.05) growth than those fed diet 8 (100% fish meal replacement). Survival among fish fed the experimental diets did not significantly differ (96–100%) but was significantly higher (P<0.05) than survival (90%) of fish fed trash fish. These results showed that up to 80% of fish meal protein can be replaced by processed meat meal and blood meal coming from terrestrial animals with no adverse effects on growth, survival, and feed conversion ratio of E. coioides juveniles.

SEAFDEC (Aquaculture Department and Secretariat) and the Government of Myanmar organized the 'Regional Technical Consultation (RTC) on development and Use of Alternative Dietary Ingredients or Fish Meal Substitutes in Aquaculture Feed Formulation'. The meeting was convened with the main purpose of providing a forum for charting the regional priorities and future directions on feed development, particularly on the use of alternative feed ingredients or protein substitutes. The specific objectives were to: (i) review the ASEAN-SEAFDEC member country status, constraints associated with developing alternative dietary ingredients for aquaculture feed; (ii) identify specific advances being made in the region with respect to the development of alternative aquaculture feed ingredients; and (iii) define approaches or initiatives supporting catch reduction of low-value/trash fish; (iv) formulate relevant policy recommendations (regional and country-specific) for effective development and utilization of aquaculture feeds; and (v) enhance cooperation among member countries and relevant stakeholders on initiatives that support sustainable aquaculture practices, particularly on feeds. This publication presents the outputs of the RTC. The country reports and review papers presented during the conference which are contained in this volume are cited individually. -
Efficacy of poultry by-product meal as an effective alternative to fish meal in aquaculture feed for milkfish Chanos chanos

We verified the efficiency of poultry by-product meal (PBM) as a substitute for fish meal (FM) in feed for juvenile milkfish (Chanos chanos). Juveniles (mean 48.0 g) were fed for 12 weeks with two experimental feeds containing different levels of PBM (8.0% and 12%), FM (10% and 5.0%), and cod liver oil (fish oil or FO, 4.0% and 3.8%). A feed without PBM having higher levels of FM and FO (20% and 4.5%, respectively) was used as control. Weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio were not significantly affected by the levels of dietary PBM. In addition, no significant differences were detected among the dietary groups in plasma triglyceride, total cholesterol, phospholipid, glucose, or total protein concentrations. Furthermore, crude protein, crude fat, moisture, and ash contents in the whole body, liver, and dorsal muscle were not significantly influenced by the dietary treatments. The results of organoleptic examinations that included tests of smell, flavor, and texture were almost the same among the dietary groups. These results indicated that PBM is the applicable substitute for FM, with performance of the high PBM feed (PBM-FM-FO = 12%-5.0%-3.8%) being comparable to that of the control feed. -

Epinephelus coioides juveniles were stocked in 36 units of 250-litre tanks at 25 fish/tank. Eight dietary treatments representing increasing (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80 and 100%) percentage replacements of fish meal protein with 4:1 combination of meat meal and blood meal were tested in quadruplicate groups of fish arranged in a completely randomized design. Weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR), survival, food conversion rate (FCR) and body composition of fish were determined. Up to 80% of fish meal protein could be replaced by processed meat meal and blood meal, with no adverse effects on growth, survival and feed conversion efficiency of E. coioides juveniles. Use of animal byproduct meals as protein source substantially lowered the level of fish meal required in the juvenile grouper diet. The diet could be effectively used as a substitute for trash fish feeding, thereby reducing the requirements for fishery resource. From an economic standpoint, replacement of fish meal with cheaper animal byproduct meals in a practical diet for grouper could alleviate the problem of low fish meal availability and high cost.
