นามธรรม
One unidentified species of copepod belonging to the genus Caligus of the family Caligidae was found to infest the adult milkfish broodstock. To control the parasites infesting the adult milkfish, tests were made using the chemical (2,2,2-trichloro-1-hydroxyl)-phosphonic acid-dimethylethol (Neguvon) at a concentration of 0.25 ppm. It is noted that a concentration of 0.25 ppm of Neguvon maintained for 12-24 hours in the sabalo-containing tanks in a closed water system but with aeration is effective in controlling the parasites. Fish mortality during the experiment was due to inadequate aeration in the tanks.

Use of metaldehyde as molluscicide in milkfish ponds

    Borlongan, I. G.; Coloso, R. M.; Blum, R. A. (British Crop Protection Council, 1996)
METAR metaldehyde formulations were tested under laboratory and faild conditions againts brackishwater pond snails (certhium so.). Under laboratory conditions the LC50 and LC99 3 days after treatment ranged from 2 - 3.5 and 4.8 - 5.4 kg/ha, respectively. However. these levels proved inffection when applied directly under actual pond conditions. In ponds with snail populatin of about 300/m2, a higher application rate of 30 kg/ha is recommended. Application of META metaldehyde concentrations of 0 - 175 kg/ha did not affect milkfish juveniles (1 - 3g body weight) 7 days after treatment. Results suggest that META metaldehyde formulations were effective for pond snail control without detrimental effect on juvenile milkfish.

Research activities and accomplishments of the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department, 1988-1991

Marte, Clarissa L. (Aquaculture Department, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, 1993)
Research studies conducted from 1988 to 1991 focused on breeding, seed production, and farming of thirteen aquaculture species of regional importance. Studies aimed at developing economical feeds, as well as disease prevention and control were undertaken. Guided by the recommendations of ADSEA I (Seminar-Workshop on Aquaculture Development in Southeast Asia; 8-12 Sept. 1987; Iloilo City, Philippines), workshops to review the previous years' progress and identify specific studies for implementation were held annually since 1989 with the participation of academic institutions, government and private sectors. Some 212 studies were implemented. Majority were on tiger shrimp, milkfish, and sea bass. Studies on other species of fishes, crustaceans, molluscs, and seaweeds, as well as larval food organisms, seafarming and economics of hatchery and grow-out culture systems were also undertaken. As of December 1991, 168 studies were completed. Research results were published in 204 scientific journals, proceedings, and other publications. In addition, 27 papers were in press and 63 manuscripts had been submitted. That research output is gaining recognition in the international scientific community can be gleaned from the number of papers published in refereed journals covered by Current Contents (CC). Of the 142 papers published in scientific journals in 1988-1991, 115 (81%) appeared in CCcovered journals. This has increased from 58.8% (124 of 211) in 1976-1987. The active participation of the research staff in scientific meetings is equally evident from the number of publications in proceedings of scientific meetings from 1988-1991 (63).

Effects of temperature on behavior, growth, development and survival of young milkfish, Chanos chanos Forsskal

Villaluz, A. C.; Unggui, A. (Aquaculture Department, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, 1981)
The effects of 3 temperature treatments on activity, feeding, growth, development and survival of young milkfish (Chanos chanos) were investigated under laboratory conditions. It is believed that the results may be applied to develop a land-based mass production technology in rearing milkfish fry to fingerlings.
